Birdsong of the Ilulissat Icefjord, Greenland
(Outside the balcony of a guesthouse in Ilulissat, Greenland.)
Greenland has always been a dream destination for me. Compared to Taiwan, it’s much easier to find quiet places here. However, on windless days, once you leave the towns where Greenlanders live, you’re often met with complete and profound silence—so much so that the recorder picks up absolutely no sound at all.
This recording was made in the spring of 2025, from the balcony of the guesthouse where we were staying. Since the sea ice in the Ilulissat Icefjord had not yet melted, seabirds gathered and moved about between the ice and the small patch of open water near the guesthouse, where the ice had already thawed.
In the background of the recording, you can hear the low-frequency hum of air conditioning units from the guesthouse and nearby houses. Occasionally, there's the sound of water gurgling up from a submerged drainage pipe—possibly from a building or a factory. The seabirds on the ice were about 200 to 500 meters away. I couldn’t identify the species, but they can be roughly divided into two types—one might have been Iceland gulls (Larus glaucoides), and the other seemed to be common eiders (Somateria mollissima) that dive into the water. In this recording, you can hear a lively soundscape woven together by the birds’ calls, wing flaps, and the sounds of them diving into the water.
