Birdsong of Ilulissat, Greenland, April 2025

Outside the balcony of a guesthouse in Ilulissat, Greenland on April, 2025.

Greenland has always been a dream destination for me. Walking alone on the trail often gives me the illusion that I’m the only person left in the world.

This recording was made in the spring of 2025, from the balcony of the guesthouse where we were staying. Since the sea ice had not yet melted, seabirds gathered and moved about between the ice and the small patch of open water near the guesthouse, where the ice had already thawed.

The seabirds on the ice were about 200–500 meters away. I couldn’t identify their species, but they generally fell into two types—one was some kind of gull, and the other was a type of duck that dives underwater. In this recording, you can hear the seabirds calling, flapping their wings, and the sounds of them diving into the water.
