Pisirian pebble beach, December 2025

Pebble beach of Pisirian, Taitung county, December 21, 2025

Pisirian is located near Sanxiantai and is a coastal Indigenous community in Chenggong Township, Taitung County. I visited once before the COVID-19 pandemic, and its simple, unadorned environment left a deep impression on me. When I returned several years later, I found that although the scenery remained the same, many things seemed to have changed. In order not to let my memories gradually fade and be forgotten, I decided to document the sounds of this place.

The location of the recording is a pebble beach beside the road leading from Pisirian to Sanxiantai. At the time, the sky had only just begun to brighten, and there were already a few local people on the beach. Most of them were wearing long boots, and some were holding scoop-like tools, similar to ladles used for cleaning drains. They walked back and forth along the shore, selecting stones washed up by the waves. They seemed unconcerned when they noticed someone standing by the coast holding a microphone and recording the sound of the waves, and they simply continued with their work.

This recording includes only the portions without human-made sounds. The wind was relatively strong from early morning that day, and the waves sometimes splashed as they hit the shore, so I did not dare to get too close to the water while recording. In the recording, you can hear the sound produced as the stones are stirred and rolled when the seawater recedes back into the ocean.
